Hatiya Dwip Government College was founded in 1970 as Hatiya Paurashava College within Hatiya Paurashava, initially functioning as a private educational institution. The college began offering Higher Secondary education to students in the region, addressing the critical need for accessible higher learning opportunities on Hatiya Island. During its early decades, the institution operated under private management while gradually expanding its academic offerings and student enrollment. The college originally served Hatiya town and surrounding areas, slowly building its reputation as a reliable educational center. In later years, the institution transitioned from private to government status, becoming Hatiya Dwip Government College. This transformation brought improved infrastructure, government-qualified faculty, and enhanced academic programs. The name change reflected the college's expanded role serving all of Hatiya Upazila, not just the municipal area. The EIIN number 107464 was assigned upon becoming a recognized government institution under the National University system.

Hatiya Dwip Government College has earned recognition as one of the most prominent and ideal higher education institutions in Hatiya Upazila since its establishment. For over five decades, it has educated thousands of students from this coastal island community, providing affordable quality education to approximately 750,000 residents who previously lacked government college access. The college maintains an active Facebook page for student updates and result announcements. Its official website at hdc.edu.bd is currently being updated to serve students digitally. The institution offers co-education programs across fourteen departments, producing graduates who contribute to Bangladesh's development. The average teacher age of 40 years indicates experienced faculty dedicated to student success. Moving forward, the college aims to expand its Honours programs, improve campus infrastructure, and enhance digital learning facilities. As the sole government higher education provider in Hatiya Upazila, its future growth remains vital for the educational development of this island region in Noakhali District.
